Forces of Fantasy vol.2

 Le Grootslang est une créature des Sables Périlleux dont le nom (et l'historique) est bien évidemment directement inspiré du Grootslang, un cryptide sud-africain dont le nom vient des mots afrikaaner groot (grand) et slang (serpent). Cette créature, sensée avoir la tête d'un éléphant et le corps d'un serpent. Des légendes locales évoquent la monstruosité de la bête et son intelligence, si bien que les dieux voulurent la détruire. Son annihilation aboutit à la création des serpents et des éléphants, tandis que certains de ses descendants purent peut-être survivre. Bien que ce monstre n'apparaissent dans aucune source, on trouve dans Forces of Fantasy vol.2, dans la partie consacrée à l'Arabie, un marquage de bouclier montrant explicitement un éléphant au corps étrangement longiligne et à l'aspect menaçant, aux pattes griffues et à la queue évoquant furieusement un serpent. L'idée était à partir de là toute trouvée pour imaginer un monstre qui serait propre à l'Arabie (même s'il est déjà apparu dans d'autres univers de Fantasy), un prédateur antédiluvien qui habiterait jungles et marais et aurait une rivalité ancienne et brutale avec une autre espèce antique, les dragons. J'y ai adjoint le nom local de "Mokele" en référence au Mokélé-mbembé, un autre cryptide africain qu'on compare souvent à l'éléphant.

L'illustration utilisée pour le Grootslang a été commandée spécialement pour les Sables Périlleux. Basée sur l'image officielle présentée ci-contre (et dont les éléments sont par ailleurs tous repris dans les Sables périlleux à différents endroits), l'artiste a largement imprimé sa marque en donnant par exemple une justification aux ailes apparaissant sur l'animal représenté sur le bouclier : de multiples protubérances similaires à une collerette formant les oreilles et elle-même inspirée des lézards à collerettes. J'apprécie énormément ce que Maxarkes a fait de ce monstre, avec une queue serpentine dotée de griffes similaires à celle de la trompe, autorisant le monstre à manipuler des objets comme il le ferait avec des mains ou déchiqueter ses proies, ainsi qu'un regard intelligent et un l'air à la fois amusé et cruel qui lui donne sa gueule rehaussée de défenses.

Forces of Fantasy vol.2

The Grootslang is a creature of the Perilous Sands whose name (and story) is of course directly inspired by the Grootslang, a South African cryptid whose name comes from the Afrikaaner words groot (big) and slang (snake). This creature is said to have the head of an elephant and the body of a snake. Local legends tell of the monstrousness of the beast and its intelligence, so that the gods wanted to destroy it. Its annihilation led to the creation of snakes and elephants, while some of its descendants may have survived. Although this monster does not appear in any source, in Forces of Fantasy vol.2, in the section on Araby, there is a shield marking explicitly showing an elephant with a strangely long body and menacing look, clawed limbs and a tail furiously reminiscent of a serpent. The idea was there to imagine a monster that would be specific to Araby (even if it has already appeared in other fantasy universes), an antediluvian predator that would inhabit jungles and marshes and would have an old and brutal rivalry with another very ancient species, the dragons. I have added the local name "Mokele" in reference to the Mokélé-mbembé, another African cryptid that is often compared to the elephant.

The illustration used for the Grootslang was commissioned especially for the Perilous Sands. Based on the official picture shown to the right (the elements of which are all used in Perilous Sands in various places), the artist has largely made his mark by, for example, justifying the wings on the animal on the shield: multiple protuberances similar to a collar that forms the ears and is itself inspired by frilled lizards. I really like what Maxarkes has done with this monster, with a serpentine tail with claws similar to that of the trunk, allowing the monster to manipulate objects as it would with hands or tear up its prey, as well as an intelligent stare and an expression of both amusement and cruelty given by its tusk-enhanced mouth.
